Prosecutor: Fort Smith School Board Violated Information Act

A prosecutor says the Fort Smith School Board violated the state's Freedom of Information Act when they conducted business through a series of emails.

School board members discussed the new slate of school board officers prior to elections.

The Southwest Times Record reportsthat Sebastian County prosecutor Dan Shue issued a letter to school board members Nov. 8. informing them of the violation.

School board president Deannie Mehl says she was under impression that the email thread met FOIA arguments because the proposed slate of officers was first presented in a public meeting. She says the chain of emails was not meant to deceive anyone.

Mehls says the practice of sending emails among all board members was not something they routinely do and will not happen again.
